She was only 15 years old, when she was married to an elector in forlorn Bavaria. She, being a princess full of spirit from the Turin court in Savoy, tying the knot as Electress Henriette Adelaide of Bavaria with Elector Ferdinand Maria, who was 15 years of age, too. Actually, they became a very happy couple and Henriette evolved into the most important counselor of her husband – a fact that was quite uncommon by the standards of the time.
Likewise, she was acting in Nymphenburg Palace, which she received as a present by her husband for their son Max Emanuel’s birth: she invited her Italian master builders to Munich. Her influence in the building style can still be seen in the central main building, even if it was extended, topped up and reconstructed.
Only her son, Elector Max Emanuel is extending Nymphenburg Palace to a spacious winged site, because he remembered the baroque splendor of Versailles, where he lived in exile at the Sun King Ludwig XIV. ‘s court for quite some time. Thus, Versailles became the inspiring example for Nymphenburg Palace and new Schleißheim Palace. Elector Karl Albrecht, the grandson of Henriette Adelaide finally completed Nymphenburg Palace’s complex with its round buildings to today’s looks.
The rulers of the House of Wittelsbach and their families lived here at Nymphenburg Palace until the Bavarian monarchy collapsed. Until now His Royal Highness, Duke Franz of Bavaria is living here in the left wing of the palace.

The private tour throughout the palace is inviting you to learn more about the building’s history, the interiors and the original furnishing of the palace, which survived both wars without damage.
