The English Garden is both the soul and the “green living room” of Munich’s locals.
The English Garden has 5 million visitors every year and the number is growing. With its 384 hectares, the English Garden is the largest inner-city park in the world and extremely popular with Munich residents and visitors from all over the world.
It has not been like this ever since! When the park was laid out shortly after the French Revolution, the citizens of Munich simply considered this idea of a recreational area for the whole people as a “folly”.
In the 18th century only the nobility strolled through the gardens of Munich, which were only open to the upper classes. Access was closed to the common people, and the dusty streets outside the city, naked and without trees, were not necessarily inviting for strolling.
It is thanks to the Earl of Rumford – an American-born Bavarian royal minister – that this park for the common people has been created where in former times there was a terrain endangered by constant flooding and wildly overgrown with alder bushes, birches and willows.
The statue of “Harmless” (the “Harmlos”) at the transition from the Hofgarten to the English Garden welcomes the visitor. Here it says: “Harmlos / wandelt hier / dann kehret / neu gestaerkt / zu jeder / Pflicht zurück” (“Harmless / walks here / then returns / newly strengthened / to each / duty”)
The very famous garden artist Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, has transformed this area into an English landscape garden in keeping with the spirit of the Enlightenment. Instead of a baroque, axially symmetrical design, as was still common in gardens up to this time, nature, which was equated with reason, was given free rein. Really?
Come with us on a tour of discovery of the English Garden and enjoy the beauty of world’s most beautiful inner-city park.
