The Viktualienmarkt is situated on this area already for 200 years. It had to be moved there from nowadays Marienplatz, due to reasons of space. In former times the booths were assigned to the merchants on a daily basis, nowadays’ booths are permanent features of the market and its unique appearance. Nestled between Heilig-Geist-Kirche (Holy-Ghost-Church), Schrannenhalle and butchers’ row, today’s Viktualienmarkt is another one of Munich’s famous landmarks.
Another unique feature of Viktualienmarkt is the city’s most central beer-garden seating 1000 people. Here beer from all 6 important Munich breweries is served and not even the inhabitants of Munich are able to figure out the unfathomable system. One day you will be served Augustiner, the next day Hacker-Pschorr, another day Löwenbräu or Paulaner, Spaten or Hofbräu. Whichever beer is served, the seats in the shadow of the old chestnut trees are inviting you anyway to rest in the unique congeniality of a Munich beer-garden.
On our tour we look behind the scenes of Viktualienmarkt and meet stall owners, folk-like singers – and maybe even the so called “Pretzel Rider” in Holy-Ghost-Church.
And – in case you are hungry, or just want to enjoy the market’s delicacies: just enjoy!
Or you likewise book our Viktualienmarkt tasting tour, where selected booths have treats ready for you.
