Church tours in Munich
In the footsteps of faith
Whether it's unmissable landmarks like the Frauenkirche, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche or St. Peter, or more hidden cultural treasures like the Asamkirche and the Dreifaltigkeitskirche: Munich's old town has a rich treasure trove of churches. They are all Catholic and thus document a piece of cultural history. Other religious communities had a hard time in the Bavarian capital for a long time, and "Munich is colorful" only came much later.
Munich – a city of churches!
St. Michael's Church : A "cool beauty" in front of whose main entrance St. Michael casts the devil into hell - and thus resolutely banishes the new Protestant faith from the city. Inside the church we find a wide barrel vault and a bright room that invites you to pause and is a pleasant contrast to the hustle and bustle outside in the pedestrian zone.
Frauenkirche : Cathedral of Our Lady, made of red brick with two striking towers, which are still considered the city's landmark. Built in the 15th century, it maintains a style that is, for the sake of simplicity, classified as Bavarian late Gothic, even though the Gothic style was actually long gone here. The bones of Munich's patron saint, Saint Benno , can be found here, as well as a footprint, which is the subject of one of many legends.
St. Peter's : the oldest and most popular church in the city is located right next to the former market square, today's Marienplatz. Old customs are still maintained here, such as the prayer of the brewers to their patron saint, St. Florian. Here St. Peter sits on his throne, surrounded by a Roman high altar that was added much later. And here the Pope is still crowned, even if only symbolically.
