The 19th Century…

In the 1860s, Munich underwent another period of radical change. Following the incorporation of the Giesing, Au, and Haidhausen districts, the rising middle class sought greater self-determination—which brought increased responsibility and a need for more administration. The existing Old Town Hall was no longer sufficient, sparking heated debates in the "Magistrate" and the "Chamber of Community Representatives." The core of the conflict: demolition or renovation, Renaissance or Gothic, large-scale or modest?

Hauberrisser and the New Town Hall

The architectural competition was eventually won by a then-unknown student from Austria: Georg Hauberrisser. It would take 42 years for Hauberrisser to complete the Munich New Town Hall. The complex was built in three distinct stages; as soon as one section was finished, it was already clear that it would not be large enough. These different construction phases are still clearly visible on the main facade today.

To make room for this massive complex, 35 medieval houses had to be demolished—a controversial decision at the time. Today, however, the Town Hall is a beloved landmark. Its Neo-Gothic tower rises proudly over Marienplatz in the heart of the city. It houses the famous Glockenspiel, where crowds gather three times a day to enjoy the mechanical re-enactment of the knight's tournament and the joyful "Schäfflertanz" (Coopers' Dance).

The tour focuses primarily on the interior, featuring highlights such as the historic council chambers, the stunning Law Library, and a visit to the Town Hall balcony.
